Current research programs of Knowledge Building
The Knowledge Building group within VCTC are the group working with Ron Borland, The Nigel Gray Distinguished Fellow in Cancer Prevention. The two main themes of their work are to strengthen the evidence base for cognitive-behavioural interventions for smoking cessation; and on the impact of tobacco control policies on smokers, including their effects on smoking cessation.
The research of the group is funded from competitive research grants, with current grants from NHMRC and overseas from the US National Institutes of Health and Canadian Institute of Health Research.

ITC collaboration
The International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project collaboration is a major international effort to systematically evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies. The core of the component studies of the collaboration consist of cohort or panel surveys and product studies.
Research to practice interface
The research to practice program is concerned with exploring and refining the mechanism by which research influences policy (and subsequent programs).
Tobacco futures
Exploration of possible futures for tobacco control, including stronger regulation of the tobacco industry and the use of smokeless tobacco.
Understanding smoking cessation
Studies to increase our understanding of the process of quitting and relapse prevention.
QuitCoach
Smokers going through the process of quitting can be assisted by the QuitCoach. The QuitCoach delivers interactive, computer-generated smoking cessation advice, mimicking the personalised advice provided by a counsellor.
Integrating smoking cessation services
This program of research is designed to find better ways to maximise use of smoking cessation services, and to ensure these services are properly equipped to meet the needs of special populations. Current research focusses on two areas - General Practitioner (GP) referral to a Quitline, versus in-practice management of smoking cessation; and the effectiveness of a tailored Quitline service for smokers with a history of depression.
